Impotence and Medical Care - When Treatment is Necessary

Impotence refers to a condition where a man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to engage in sexual intercourse. Impotence also referred to as erectile dysfunction, or ED, is now more widely recognized as a real medical condition. Recent studies reveal that impotence, although commonly associated with aging and old age, is now a much more prevalent problem than previously thought. More men are now being diagnosed with this condition every year than were being diagnosed with diabetes five years ago. It is estimated that more than six million men in the United States have problems with their ability to maintain an erection adequate to experience satisfactory sexual intercourse. Sadly, about half of those men have no idea they have it.

Impotence can be caused by a number of different psychological conditions. Some of the most common are depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, Parkinson's disease, fatigue, and stress. Impotence can also be caused by side effects from certain medications and drug therapies. Psychological issues such as anxiety, shame, guilt, fear, and stress are often present in those who suffer from impotence. In addition, some of the most serious psychological conditions include bipolar disorder, bi-polar disorder, major depressive disorder, and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia and delusional disorder.

Impotence results when there are problems with your neurological systems and your bodily functions such as those caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood sugar levels, depression, fatigue, or stress. When you make the necessary lifestyle changes and eat the proper foods, you will be able to overcome these psychological causes of impotence and improve your overall health. Here are some of the important lifestyle changes that you will need to make if you suffer from impotence.

Stress: Impotence stems from a variety of different psychological causes including anxiety, shame, guilt, fear, stress, and other types of psychological and emotional disorders. If you are experiencing stress at the moment, you should first evaluate whether your current lifestyle is causing the stress. If so, you should try to decrease the amount of stress that you are experiencing. For those who have physical issues with their health, like diabetes and/or high blood pressure, medication may be necessary to treat these illnesses; however, lifestyle changes will go a long way in treating and eliminating any potential causes of impotence in you.

Hypertension: Impotence can also be caused by high cholesterol and hypertension. Many people who suffer from heart disease or high cholesterol are at a high risk for impotence. If you have either of these conditions, it is important that you make lifestyle changes and eat more healthy foods. You should also reduce your levels of stress in your life and maintain a consistent exercise program. Lifestyle changes such as losing weight and quitting smoking will help you live a longer, healthier life and reduce the risk of impotence. Although there is not a clear-cut correlation between these two factors, lifestyle and diet choices do play an important role in helping you prevent heart disease.

Sexual Health: Impotence can also be caused by unhealthy sexual practices. In men, this can be caused by decreased sperm count, impaired sperm movement, reduced blood flow to the penis, hormonal changes that affect erection, and excessive masturbation. If you have one or more of these symptoms, it is imperative that you seek medical care. Impotence can cause low sexual desire, increased pain during intercourse, and erectile dysfunction. If you choose to ignore the signs and seek treatment, you could increase the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, which can lead to infertility and health risks in general. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important that you discuss these issues with your primary care doctor and consider seeking medical care to address these issues.
